# Evacuation: how to prepare and where to go

Guide · Evacuation

An evacuation is announced when staying in an area becomes dangerous. At that point there is little time to think, so it is worth making the key decisions in advance.

Prepared by the [InCaseMap team](https://incasemap.com/en/about) · Updated 16 October 2026

> **In short:** the authorities announce evacuations via LRT, phone alerts and municipal channels. Know your nearest evacuation point in advance. Keep a go-bag ready with documents, medicines, water and cash. When an evacuation is announced, follow the official instructions on timing and route, and tell your family where you are going. Find your nearest evacuation point on the InCaseMap map (in Lithuania: 1,942), which works offline too.

## Evacuation announced: what to do

1. Listen to the messages: they will tell you how long you have to leave, where the evacuation points are, where to go, what to take and which roads to use.
2. Take essential items and documents. Wear clothes that protect you: long trousers, a waterproof jacket, rubber boots, a hat.
3. Before leaving, turn off the water and gas valves, unplug electrical appliances, take the food out of the fridge, close the windows, lock the doors, bring outdoor furniture inside.
4. Drive only on the designated roads and do not take shortcuts. If you have a car – the whole family in one car; if you are late – go on foot.
5. No car – go to the evacuation point on foot or by public transport. Nowhere to stay – go to the place the officials name.
6. Return only when officials announce that it is safe.

### What not to do

- Do not stop under high-voltage power lines; drive carefully over bridges and viaducts.

## What an evacuation point is

An evacuation point is a pre-designated place where evacuated residents gather. They are registered there, and onward travel to a safe place is organised from there. It is not a shelter: you go to the point when an evacuation is announced, not to hide from an immediate threat.

Evacuation points on the InCaseMap map: 3,139.

## Evacuation plan: what to do in advance

1. Find the nearest evacuation point to your home and work: at your municipality, on lt72.lt or on the InCaseMap map.
2. Pack a go-bag for each family member.
3. Agree on a meeting place with your family in case an evacuation catches you in different places.
4. Think about who will help children, elderly or disabled relatives, and pets.
5. Keep your car's fuel tank at least half full. Fuel stations on the InCaseMap map: 10,242. Find the cheapest fuel by [fuel prices](https://incasemap.com/en/fuel-prices-map), and for an electric car — [free charging stations](https://incasemap.com/en/ev-charging-stations).

## What to take

- ID documents and copies of important documents, cash.
- Medicines, prescriptions, a first aid kit.
- Water and snacks for at least a day, phone, charger, power bank.
- A battery-powered radio, a flashlight.
- Warm clothes, a raincoat, comfortable shoes, hygiene items.
- For children, a favourite toy or book; for pets, food and a lead.

## When an evacuation is announced

1. Listen to LRT and follow the announcements: they say who is being evacuated, where to go and by which roads.
2. If there is time, switch off electrical appliances and turn off the water and gas. Lock your home.
3. Take the specified route, even if another road looks shorter. Some roads or bridges may be closed.
4. When you arrive at the point, register and tell your family where you are.

## Travelling by car

Look up several routes in advance. If a road across a river is closed, the InCaseMap map shows other bridges (5,281) and fords (1,359). Do not stop on the roadside without need, and follow the instructions of the police and traffic controllers.

## Frequently asked questions

### Where can I find my evacuation point?

At your municipality, on lt72.lt or on the InCaseMap map. It is best to look it up in advance and walk or drive there in calm times.

### How is an evacuation point different from a shelter?

A shelter is where you hide from an immediate threat here and now. You go to an evacuation point once an evacuation is announced: people are registered there and onward travel is organised.

### What if I have no way to leave?

Go to the nearest evacuation point on foot or use transport organised by the authorities. It is announced via LRT and municipal channels.
