Shelters: what they are

A shelter is a building or part of one (usually a basement or other underground space) where you can briefly hide from an immediate threat, for example when an air raid alert is announced.

A KAS shelter — a collective protection structure (KAS), often called a bomb shelter — is a place set aside by the municipality for longer stays — it has its own layer. During an alert, the type of place matters less than how quickly you can reach the nearest safe place. More in Shelter vs bomb shelter (KAS).

Where the data comes from

Places come from official state sources: in Lithuania from PAGD open data, in the other countries from their civil protection institutions and municipalities. The data updates automatically: alerts every 1–2 minutes, weather warnings, road disruptions, fuel prices and charger status every 2–10 minutes, river levels hourly, shelter lists monthly.

The base map uses data from OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL licence). Spotted a mistake or a place that has changed? Write to us.
